Hayward, CA - June 17, 2006
Auston would like to have a do-over after this weekends event at Portland International Raceway.
Due logistical issues the Chevy Cobalt SS that Auston drove for the first two USTCC events of the year was not available for this weekend, instead he had a new BMW E-90 chassis car that was relatively unsorted.
Auston had no practice on the quick 1.9 mile, twelve turn course although valiant attempts were made. Auston took the car out in each of the two practice sessions and almost immediately the car's electronics detected a fault and went to a 'safe' mode reducing power output forcing Auston to come to the pits before completing a single lap.
The fault was finally isolated and resolved but there was no opportunity for Auston to learn this new car and make any changes necessary to suit his driving style, much less reacquaint himself with the track at speed and establish a rhythm in this new car. Consequently, Auston qualified in tenth position.
At the start of the race Auston immediately gained 5 places but things went awry when he avoided a mêlée in the first turn and could not recover positions, finishing in ninth place.
